My name is Abagail Taper and I am from Nashua, New Hampshire. And although being from New Hampshire that didn't stop me from traveling all across the US to work for an arts camp in Alaska. I took a leap of faith, not ever having been on a plane before and immersing myself in all new faces. Truly such an amazing experience that I went back for round two.
While there I took part in a variety of tasks that I otherwise wouldn't have. Such things as participating in their musical theatre program. I worked as a helping hand in all departments so I really got a taste of each aspect. I made props, helped paint the stage floor (which felt so wrong), was a part of the scenic painting crew, ushered, and helped backstage as well. With the technical director and team being the same age as me it felt even easier to ask questions and learn about working in a theatre. Work sessions never felt like work sessions and I didn't mind staying in the theatre till almost midnight.
When I returned to the camp I was the props master, and to be honest I was nervous that I would fall short. With everyone working as such an amazing team, I realized that wouldn't be a problem. We had meetings every night to discuss the next day's tasks and make sure everyone was on the same page. When told that I didn't have to be at the theatre that night, I stayed because I thought, “Well the props master doesn’t need to be here but I could do something else.” I usually found someone to help backstage or watched the technical director stress over light cues.
I learned that I really enjoyed the physical, creative working environment that is musical theatre. I enjoyed working with an amazing hardworking team to create a spectacular show. I am so eager to learn more as I continue on this journey.
